Centre will invest Rs 30,000 crore in the next three to four years to develop national highways and other important roads in the State through the central schemes including Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

This was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a public meeting cum foundation stones laying and inauguration function of some projects at Luwangsangbam under Heingang constituency on Friday.

Heingang is State Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s native constituency.

In the day’s function, Modi laid foundation stone of National Sports University; 1,000 Anganwadi centres; 19 residential complexes for teachers, doctors and nurses; 25 Sadbhavana Mandaps; improvement of road between Koirengei-Sekmai; eco-tourism at Cheirao Ching and cave tourism project at Khangkhui cave besides inaugurating Luwangpokpa Multi Sports complex; Rani Gaidinliu Park; Schedule Tribe Girls Hostel and Nute Bazaar (Women’s Market), Churachandpur

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said in the beginning of 2014, the State had a total of 1,200 kms declared length of national highways but in the last four years there has been an increase of 38 per cent by adding another 416 kms length of road.

He announced that the Central Government is going to invest about Rs 30,000 crore for development of national highways and other important roads in Manipur in the next three to four years.

Under PMGSY, the Centre has released more than Rs 1,000 crore in the last four years under for Manipur, connecting more than 150 habitations during this period.

The Centre has also approved a new central sector scheme of North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme which will fill up gap in creation of infrastructure in specified sector, he added.

He said the Centre has also increased the number of police personnel from the north-eastern region in Delhi Police.

430 candidates, including 136 women candidates from the region have joined the Delhi Police, out of which 49 candidates are from Manipur.

The Central Government recently sanctioned 10 India Reserve Battalion for the north-eastern region which included two battalions for Manipur and will directly provide job opportunity to about 2,000 youths of the State, he added.

Modi also lauded the State Government for bringing a visible change by bringing transparency and infrastructure development among others.

He also congratulated the general public for supporting the State Government and cooperating in the mission to evolve as a New Manipur.

State Governor Dr Najma Heptulla, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Rajya Sabha MPs Ksh Bhavananda and M C Mary Kom, Lok Sabha MP Prahlad Patel, Union DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (IC) (Youth Affairs & Sports) Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Manipur Assembly Speaker Y Khemchand and all the Cabinet Ministers attended the day’s function.
