The Central government has decided to hand over Kaziranga National Park and three historical monuments located in Sivasagar district to a private firm for their maintenance.

These Assam sites are among several such sites proposed to be handed over to private/public sector firms under a ‘Monument Mitra’ scheme in four phases.

The scheme has been prepared by the Central government for handing over the important historic monuments and reserved forests/wildlife sanctuaries to such firms for maintenance.

The three historical monuments of Assam in Sivasagar district, which are proposed to be handed over to a private firm under the scheme, are the 18th century amphitheatre Rang Ghar, the Ahom royal palace Kareng Ghar and the Ahom-era Shiva temple Shiva Doul.

JTI Group has been named as the Monument Mitra for the Kaziranga National Park and the Sivasagar monuments, stated a Central government notification, the Assam Tribune reports.

The important monuments and forests, which have been sought to be handed over under the scheme are Qutub Minar in Delhi (Yatra Online Pvt Ltd), Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra (Yatra Online Pvt Ltd), Sun Temple at Konark (TK International Ltd and Dalmia Bharat in phases), Purana Quila in Delhi (NBCC), Red Fort in Delhi (phase-wise to GMR Sports Pvt Ltd, Dalmia Bharat and Inter Globe Foundation), Khajuraho Temple at Khajuraho (GMR Sports Pvt Ltd), Hampi in Karnataka (Yatra Online Pvt Ltd), Char Minar in Hyderabad (ITC Hotels), Leh Palace in Jammu and Kashmir (Yatra Online Pvt Ltd), Bio Diversity Park at Vasant Kunj (De-Archer and Angel), Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya (YES Bank), Ancient ruins of Nalanda (YES Bank), Amer Fort at Jaipur (V-Resorts) and Tipu Palace at Bengaluru (V-Resorts), among others.
