The BJP has planned to appoint MP Om Birla as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. It is almost confirmed that the two-time MP from Rajasthan’s Kota, Om Birla will be nominated as speaker of the lower house that began its session on Monday, India Today reported.
Om Birla’s wife Amit Birla told reporters that it was a very proud moment for the family.
“It is a very proud and a happy moment for us. We are very thankful to the cabinet for choosing him,” she told a news agency.
Birla, who contested 2019 Lok Sabha polls on BJP ticket, defeated Congress’s Ramnarayan Meena with a huge margin of over 2.5 lakh votes in the Kota-Bundi seat.
Birla will be replacing previous Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan who did not contest the Lok Sabha elections this year.
