Meghalaya Assembly Speaker and president of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Donkupar Roy alleged that BJP-led NDA government is encouraging migration from Bangladesh to Northeast.
He said the urgency to enact the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 is a pointer to that.
A Shillong Today report quoted Roy as saying that if there is migration, there will be a direct threat to the existence of the indigenous people of the region.
The Meghalaya Assembly Speaker cited the example of Tripura where because of migration the indigenous Tripuri population was reduced to minority within a short span of time.
The UDP president was also quoted as saying that if further migration is allowed to take place, several ‘indigenous people will become minorities in their own land’
He also termed the passage of the Bill as ‘unwise decision’ without taking into account the feelings and sentiments of the indigenous people of the Northeast.
Roy further said that the BJP MLAs of Meghalaya do not reflect the party ideology in the State.
He said that by removing the BJP legislators from the government will not make any difference as the state government is not led by the BJP but an NPP-UPP and other regional parties led government.
