Meghalaya has recorded 67 per cent voter turnout in the State Assembly polls on Tuesday as per the updated figure that the Election Commission received at 5 pm.

Chief Election Officer of Meghalaya FR Kharkongor reportedly stated that the Election Commission is yet to receive polling percentage update from Garo Hills region, which accounts for 40 per cent of the overall polling booths in Meghalaya.

Kharkongor also reportedly informed that polling is still continuing in about 22-25 pc of the total polling stations across Meghalaya.

As per media reports, voting in Meghalaya began on Tuesday from 7 am. Voting is being held in 59 Assembly constituencies for the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

A total of 372 candidates are contesting the Assembly polls after three of the candidates had withdrawn their nomination papers for the polls.

Campaigning in Meghalaya came to an end at 4 pm on Sunday.

Election for Williamnagar Assembly constituency has been postponed following the death of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Jonathone N Sangma.

While there are 17.68 lakh voters in Meghalaya, a total of 372 candidates are contesting in Meghalaya. Out of the total candidates, 32 female candidates are trying their luck in Meghalaya

There are a total of 3,082 polling stations in Meghalaya including 60 all-women polling stations.

The campaign for the polls in Meghalaya came to an end on Sunday evening.

While the Congress has fielded a total of 59 candidates the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded 47 candidates, and 31 women and 80 Independents are in the fray in the Meghalaya polls.
