Assam: Anti-CAA protest continues in Delhi

Hundreds of anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) agitators on Saturday thronged Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and demanded the government to withdraw the Act.

Ever since Parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019 and subsequent assent of President Ram Nath Kovind for making it an Act, youths from northeastern states, especially Assam have been agitating against Government’s decision in implementing CAA in India.

“We are against the CAA. It is totally unconstitutional. It also threatens our identity, culture, and tradition,” said Raeesa, an Assamese, who works in the national capital.

Echoing the same view, Mriganka Saikia, another agitator said that they would continue their strike against Government’s unconstitutional decision.

“We can’t accept whatever government imposes on us…security and right of the indigenous people of Assam and Northeast are at stake,” said Saikia.

The agitators also staged a candlelight procession in front of Assam Bhawan opposing the Act.

“We will not allow the government to confer citizenship to people coming from across the border till Dr ember 31, 2014,” said another agitator.

He said that the government should adhere to the Assam Accord and accordingly stick to the dateline of recognizing people who have come to Assam on or before March 25, 1971, as an Indian.
