Guwahati: Assam’s wicket-keeper batter Uma Chetry has been named in the Indian senior women’s cricket squad for the upcoming multi-format IDFC First Bank series against South Africa to be played in India later this month.
Chetry will be playing in all three formats – Test, One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) during the series which will feature one test match and three ODIs and T20Is each respectively.

The visitors will start the tour with a warm-up match against the Board President XI on June 13 in Karnataka’s Bengaluru, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Pritam Mahanta said in a statement on Friday.
Chetry was first called for national duty in June 2023 when she was selected for the Indian team that toured Bangladesh. Later that year, she was also part of the Indian women’s team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games held in China, it said.
Taking to microblogging site X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Congratulations to rising star Uma Chetry on being selected to the Indian Cricket Team for the upcoming series against South Africa. She is the first player from Assam to be selected in the Test squad of a cricket tournament. My heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Uma!”

On the other hand, the ACA while expressing pride in the young cricketer’s achievement said, “We are always ready to support our players in whatever way we can. It’s great to witness Uma Chetry’s progress. We hope Uma’s success will inspire other girls in Assam to take the sport seriously and excel. We wish Uma and Team India all the best for the upcoming series against South Africa.”
