Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said women weavers of Assam have to play an important role in bolstering the growth of Indian economy.
Inaugurating a handloom cluster project at Lejai in Dibrugah district, chief minister Sonowal said that the reality that weavers of Assam are superior to their counterparts in other parts of the country will have to be shown through performances.

He said that using latest mode of science and technology, the output of the wavers of Assam will have to be enhanced.
Referring to Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi who said weavers of Assam weave dreams in their looms is the testimony of the superiority of handloom and textile in Assam.
Sonowal also said that the dignity of the weavers of Assam and their creation got shot in the arm when Prime Minister Narendra Modi uses Assamese gamocha on various occasions.

The Handloom and Textile fairs started from 2015, provided an impetus to the growth of the weavers in Assam. He also said since present time is dominated by competition, the weavers of the state will have to prove their superiority through their skills.
Sonowal said that Swami Vivekananda’s once said the society which worships women are superior in all respects.
Women are the great teachers and their energy is the ultimate energy.
He, therefore said that the woman of the state need to show their supremacy by empowering themselves.
He also cited the example of his mother who taught him to become self-sufficient and competent in life.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonowal said for the empowerment of farmers, the State Government in line with the Centre has adopted various programmes.
As a result of those schemes, the products of the farmers of the State are being sold in London, Duba etc.
It may be noted that government is all set to set up Handloom Cluster development center involving worth Rs 15.34 crore in Sivasagar, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Golaghat and Lakhimpur.
