Woman commits suicide in Jorhat
Body of the deceased

Sensation prevailed at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) when a woman jumped from the second floor of the building housing the maternity ward and died early on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Pinky Tanti and she leaves behind two daughters and a six-day-old son in the ward.

A doctor at the hospital has not ruled out postnatal depression as one of the causes but said that it hadn’t been perceptible.

The doctor, quoting others present in the ward, said on Tuesday she argued with her husband Akash Tanti.

“She looked disturbed and was not on her bed for most of the time. She also sought for her husband when he was not near,” the doctor said.

Pinky and Akash belong to Behora tea estate at Bokakhat under Golaghat district.

“She was admitted to JMCH on Friday, a day after the baby was born. She had issues of low haemoglobin levels,” the doctor said.

“I went looking for her when I did not see her on the bed in the morning and found her the second floor of the building,” Akash said.

“However, I could not prevent her from jumping,” he added.

On being asked if she previously attempted suicide, Akash said, “She used to tell me sometimes that as if someone was beating her.”
