Even as the water level in the Brahmaputra and it’s tributaries are showing receding trends, the death toll in floods in the state touched 60 on Saturday with 12 more casualties reported in Nalbari, Barpeta, Dhubri, Morigaon and South Salmara districts.
While five people died in Morigaon district, one each died in Nalbari and Dhubri districts. On the other hand, three people have lost their lives in Barpeta district and two persons have perished in South Salmara district.
The number of people taking shelter in the relief camp reduced to 1.31 lakh on Saturday from 1.47 lakh on Friday after the floodwaters started receding.
The total number of people hit by the second wave floods in the state also improved from 53.52 lakh to almost 44.8 lakh on Saturday. At least 24 out of 33 districts in the state continued to reel under the floods.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the water level of the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Goalpara and Dhubri; Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh (Golaghat) and Kopili at Dharamtul (Nagaon) continued to flow above the danger level.
Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi on Saturday made an aerial survey of the flood hit areas in Goalpara, South Salmara, Dhubri, Barpeta, Kamrup and asked the administrations to take up relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction work on a war footing.
Governor Mukhi visited three relief camps–B.C Memorial ME school relief camp, Govt Girls HS School and PC Institute Relief camp Gauripu- in Dhubri district and interacted with the inmates there.
He also took stock of the relief materials being provided in the relief camps and asked deputy commissioner Dhubri Anant Lal Gyani to leave no stone unturned to give adequate reliefs to the flood victims including taking special care to the children, old age persons and women.
The governor later held a meeting with DC and other administrative heads of different departments of Dhubri and asked them to take special care for the rehabilitation of the flood victims in the wake of receding trends of flood waters.
