GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a controversial remark, questioning the need of an opposition in the state.

“There seems to be no need of an opposition in Assam,” said chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while speaking to the media.

He questioned: “What is the need of an opposition in a state like Assam, where the government is doing works that needs no questioning.”

The Assam chief minister made this statement while claiming that the ruling BJP government in the state has been “working tirelessly for the welfare of the people” of the state.

This remark from Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma came in the backdrop of at least two Congress MLAs extending support to the chief minister and the BJP government in the state.

It may be mentioned here that at least two senior Congress workers have decided to show their full support to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, irrespective of the party’s stand.

Assam Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das have decided to extend their support to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Notably,  Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das met and felicitated Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday (February 14).

“Two MLAs of the Assam Congress – Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das – have decided to support the welfare policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam chief minister also took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the support shown by the two MLAs from the state.

He said: “Although Rahul Gandhi started the Bharat Jodo Yatra, it has now become Congress Todo Yatra.”

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma further expressed hope that all the remaining Congress MLAs in due course of time will extend support and “also join us soon”.

“Out of 25 MLAs of Assam Congress, till now four MLAs including Shashi Kant Das and Siddiq Ahmed have joined our Vikas Yatra,” said CM Sarma.

He added: “The remaining 21 MLAs will also join us soon.”
