Guwahati: Fresh political controversy has erupted in Assam after an audio clip allegedly involving Palasbari BJP MLA Hemanga Thakuria surfaced, where a voice is heard discussing commissions related to land transactions.
The clip, which has gone viral on social media, has sparked sharp political reactions across the state and fuelled a renewed attack on the ruling BJP.
In the purported recording, the speaker reportedly refers to land brokering and alleged commission demands running into several lakhs of rupees, including a claim of ?1 lakh commission per bigha of land. The voice also repeatedly mentions personal โbenefitโ and expresses the desire to remain an MLA for decades, prompting questions over propriety and accountability in public office.
Reacting to the development, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a fierce attack on the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, accusing it of encouraging corruption and lawlessness.
โAnother hour, another controversial BJP leader close to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is in the news for the wrong reasons,โ Gogoi wrote on social media platform X.
Escalating his criticism, Gogoi alleged that Assam is witnessing โgundarajโ under the present regime. โCharging commission for land deals, stealing FCI grain, encroaching tribal land, cow syndicate, coal syndicate-this is the gundaraj in Assam under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,โ he said, asserting that the Congress will โremove these people from power in four months,โ while reiterating the slogan #NatunAxom (New Assam).
Meanwhile, India Today NE attempted to contact Palasbari MLA Hemanga Thakuria for his comments, but he remained unavailable.
As the authenticity of the audio clip remains unverified, the controversy has intensified political sparring in Assam, with the opposition demanding accountability and the ruling party terming the allegations baseless and politically motivated.
