Guwahati: Veteran Assamese actress Purabi Sarma died after suffering a cardiac arrest in Guwahati on Tuesday evening. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Her mortal remains are being brought to her residence at Shantipur, where family members, friends, colleagues and admirers are expected to pay their last respects.

One of the most recognised faces of Assamese cinema, Sarma built a career spanning several decades with acclaimed performances in films and television. She made her film debut with Ajoli Nabou, while one of her early films, Ragini, went on to receive a National Award.

Over the years, she appeared in several notable productions, including Porobhat (2022), and became a familiar face on television through serials such as Gateway (2006). Her performances earned appreciation from audiences across generations.

Sarma shared the screen with several leading figures of Assamese cinema, including Kulada Kumar Bhattacharyya, and remained actively associated with the industry through major cultural platforms such as the Filmfare Awards Assamese and the Prag Cine Awards. She also featured alongside singer Zubeen Garg in the music video Jua Bosore.

Beyond her acting career, Sarma shared a long association with noted actor, writer and director Tapan Das. The couple was widely respected for their contribution to Assamese cinema and the state’s cultural landscape.

Sarma’s death marks the end of a distinguished career that left a lasting imprint on Assamese films and television.
