Union Territory Demand Committee (UTDC) from Barak Valley, wants it to be granted Union Territory status. In response to this demand they have decided to take out a rally in Silchar on January 16.
President of Silchar chapter of Union Territory Demand Committee (UTDC), Sanjit Debnath said after the rally in Silchar, they will also carry on a dharna in New Delhi. The date for the dharna in the capital is yet to be decided.
They also have plans to submit a memorandum of their demands to the President, Prime Minister, Home Minister and opposition leaders of various parties. People and different organizations of Barak Valley have extended their full support.
If the Barak Valley is declared as a Union Territory, it will be renamed Purbanchal. The name Barak Valley is derived from the Barak river that flows through it.
President of Silchar chapter of Union Territory Demand Committee (UTDC), has made allegations that the Central and State governments are prejudiced against it. With it being a Union Territory, the valley can receive direct funds from the centre for better administration.
