Locals of greater Kalaigaon area in Udalguri district still remember the devastating floods that ravaged the area in 2015, where thousand bighas of crops were damaged.

14 villages were inundated that year.

According to the flood affected people, due to incessant rains in August 2015, the river Noa had overflowed and flooded several villages like Rupatal, Bhehguri, Balipara, Shagunbahi and Gerua along with a part of Kalaigaon town.

Floods damaged the embankment and river Noa changed its course in 2015 and washed away nine houses.

Two new RCC buildings of Rupatal LP School in Rupatal were also damaged and people feared that if the situation does not change, they will face a grim reality in the future.

After the floods, a team from Udalguri District Administration visited to assess of the flood affected regions, especially the damaged embankment, school buildings and agriculturel fields.

Although the team had assured that the District Administration would resolve this issue promptly, they have yet to take any steps to repair the damaged embankment of river Noa.

The locals said that unless the embankment was repaired soon, this year too they might lose their property during rainy seasons. Locals want the damaged embankment repaired before monsoon.
