In separate incidents of lawlessness two persons have been arrested by police in Jorhat district of eastern Assam during the past 24 hours.

In the first incident, one Manoj Sharma was arrested for threatening traders frequently at the JPR junction rail yard where rakes are unloaded from goods trains.

He was, however, let off on bail.

Jorhat Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Nimbalkar said that that Sharma was arrested on the basis of a case registered against him at the Jorhat police station following a complaint being lodged by a traders’ body recently.

A case (number 1921/2018) has been registered at the Jorhat police station under Sections 143 (member of an unlawful assembly) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. The sections are bailable.

In the second incident, police arrested one Pratap Gogoi from Nakachari area under Deberapar police outpost of Mariani police station.

Gogoi, reportedly an advisor of Nakachari unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) was arrested on charges of demanding money and assaulting a shopkeeper – Doongarmal Parik – of number 7 Balijan village under  Deberapar police outpost.

He along with his accomplice Debojit Gogoi also allegedly manhandled and molested Parik’s wife during the incident.

He has been arrested  by the Mariani Police and a case (Number 173/18) registered under Sections 387 (putting a person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 34 (common intention).

Nimbalkar said that police were looking out for Debojit, who was evading arrest.
