Two Assam girls found their berths in the Jwaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union after winning the election on Sunday.
The United Left has swept all the major seats.
The two girls from Assam, Karabee Kakati and Srijani Bhashwa Mahanta who were part of the Left Alliance Party won the posts of councillors of the School of International Studies in the University.
Srijani is a first-year post graduate student while Karabee is a PhD research fellow.
United Left, unlike other years, had a new entrant All India Students’ Federation (AISF) besides the usual ones – Students’ Federation of India, All India Students’ Association and Democratic Students’ Federation – that contested together this year.
The election was held last Friday that witnessed 67.8 per cent participation, slightly higher than last year.
There was a brief interruption in the counting that took place on Saturday afternoon.
The interruption was created by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleging that the counting was conducted without informing them.
Notably all the candidates fielded by ABVP came second in the elections.
