Tripura’s education minister Ratan Lal Nath has asked the protesting teachers to withdraw their agitation programme as this will not benefit them in any manner.

Nath on Sunday advised the 10,323 teachers whose services had been terminated to prepare for interviews for government jobs.

The Supreme Court reportedly rejected the Tripura government’s proposal of providing special benefits to these teachers apart from relaxation in the age limit.

Nath said, “Due to the apex court order, our government cannot offer any special facility for these teachers except age relaxation in terms of providing them with government jobs.”

“We are sympathetic towards these sacked teachers but they will have to sit for interviews to acquire government jobs,” Nath said.

These teachers had lost their jobs in March last year due to a Tripura High Court ruling in 2017 that termed their recruitment process to be faulty.

The former CPI(M) state government had recruited them.

Former education minister Tapan Chakraborty said that he had met Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on December 23 to discuss the issue of these agitating teachers.

He said, “The state government should talk with them and find a permanent solution to the problem.”

The sacked teachers have been camping on a road in Agartala for the past 35 days, battling the cold weather.

“The CPI(M) government had created 13000 new posts for these teachers and the interview process had also been completed. The present government should recruit them for those posts,” he said.
