Tokyo Olympics: Assam boxer Lovlina Borgohain gets bye in 1st round, to face Germany’s Nadine Apetz in pre-quarters

Assam boxer Lovlina Borgohain has made it through to the pre-quarters of Tokyo Olympics, thanks to withdrawal of her opponent from the event. 

Lovlina will now lock horns with Germany’s Nadine Apetz in pre-quarter final of the event on July 27.

23-year-old Lovlina Borgohain is contesting in the event in the 69 kgs welterweight category of women’s boxing. 

Notably, Lovlina is the first ever woman athlete from the state of Assam to take part in an Olympics.

Lovlina Borgohain had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in March 2020 by winning the Asia and Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. 

Apart from Lovlina, Simranjit Kaur (60 kgs women boxing event) has also qualified for the pre-quarters after getting a bye in the first round. 

In men’s boxing, pugilists Amit Panghal (52 kgs) and Satish Kumar (+91 kgs) have also qualified for pre-quarter bouts after getting byes in the first round.
