The total number of COVID-19 cases in Assam surged to 89 after three more people tested positive for the infection in Guwahati on Friday.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said of the three persons tested positive for the virus on Friday, one is from Sarusajai Quarantine centre, one is a patient of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and one has migrated to West Bengal.

“Alert ~ 3 persons tested #COVID19 + in Kamrup Metro. One person is from Sarusajai Quarantine camp, 1 indoor patient of GMCH, & one has migrated to West Bengal.
Total cases 89 Recovered 41 Active cases 44 Deaths 2 Migrated 2,” minister Sarma twitted on Friday night.

Sarma said of the total 89 cases, 44 are active.

There has been a spike in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Assam with at least 25 positive cases reported in the state since Wednesday.

While a total of seven persons tested positive for the deadly virus in Guwahati on Thursday as many as 15 positive cases  were reported in the state on Wednesday.

In Assam, two people have so far died of the fatal disease. These include a 16-year-old girl in Guwahati, who was found to be infected a day after her death on May 7.
