Police have arrested three men in connection with the rape of a 22-year-old woman from Assam, while the search for three other accused is on.
The arrested men were part of a five-member gang that allegedly raped the woman from Assam’s Darrang district near Palladam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district, The Hindu reported.
The victim, who was living in Coimbatore, approached a man, identified as Rajesh Kumar from Palladam, requesting job opportunities, said police.
Assuring her of employment in Tiruppur, Rajesh asked her to meet him, following which she travelled to Palladam on September 28 and met him at his residence.
After the meeting ended in the evening, Rajesh told her younger brother Raju (21) to drop her in his bike to the bus stop.
Raju, however, took her to an isolated place, where his acquaintances Kavin Kumar, 23, Anbu, 21 and two others were waiting.
Police said the five men took turns to rape the woman and left her at the spot.
The Palladam All Women Police registered a case against the six men under sections 147 (Punishment for rioting), 376 D (Gangrape), 384 (Punishment for extortion) and 109 (Punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment) of the Indian Penal Code.
The All Women Police arrested Raju, Kavinkumar and Anbu on Wednesday and sent them to 14-day judicial custody.
Tiruppur District superintendent of police (SP) Disha Mittal said two special teams have been formed to nab three other accused.
