The Ministry of Human Resources and Development (HRD) on Monday has approved the decision of opening a full-fledged Assamese department in Tezpur Central University.
While interacting during a Lok Sabha session on Monday, the HRD Ministry informed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has accepted the demand of opening a full-fledged Assamese department in the university.
The Ministry had been informed about this decision by the UGC through a letter on March 6.
Tezpur University will now become the third central university of India to get a full-fledged Assamese department.
Assam Sahitya Sabha had sent a memorandum to the UGC demanding the establishment of a full-fledged Assamese department in Tezpur University.
The memorandum was sent after discussions with the authorities of the university.
Assamese departments had earlier been opened in two central universities – Visva Bharati University and Assam University.
The Department of Assamese was established at the Diphu campus of Assam University in 2010.
