Tension along Assam-Arunachal border following Assamese youth’s custodial death in Arunachal Pradesh

Tension prevails along the Assam-Arunachal border following alleged custodial death of an Assamese youth at the Diyun police station in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam. The incident irked the Assam students’ bodies who staged protest in front of the Assam -Arunachal boundary gate on Saturday. Meanwhile Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma visited the site and announced an ex-gratia of fifty thousand rupees to the victim’s family.

Aggrieved student bodies of Assam from the Gorkha, Sonowal Kachari, Adivasi and Deori community besides the AASU staged protest by burning tyres in front of the border police check post in Bordumsa.

Assamese youth namely Diganta Saikia of Kujupather village of Bordumsa in Tinsukia district was picked up by Arunachal Police for his alleged involvement in a series of motor cycle theft incidents in Diyun. He was found dead inside the Diyun Police Station on Saturday morning. Arunachal Police, however, informed the youth’s family members that the youth had committed suicide inside the police station. The deceased surrendered himself before the Assam Police at Bordumsa and was later handed over to the Arunachal Police.

The agitators demanded a high level judicial probe into the custodial death of the local youth terming the act as ‘ruthless and barbaric’.

Adequate forces from Arunachal Pradesh were deployed to avert any untoward incident.

Sources informed that the police and civil administration of both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh were holding talks to bring the situation under control.
