Bajali: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Thursday emphasised the crucial role of teachers and community participation in strengthening government schools and making them the preferred choice for parents through quality, student-centred education.

Speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed Rs 8-crore main building of Bajali Higher Secondary School, Pegu said government institutions form the backbone of Assamโ€™s education system, accounting for nearly 70 per cent of schools in the state.

He stressed that committed teaching, personal attention to studentsโ€”particularly those from economically weaker backgrounds and students sitting on the back benchesโ€”can further improve academic performance in government schools.

โ€œWhen government schools perform well, parents gain confidence and enrolment increases. Higher student strength will automatically create more opportunities and greater demand for teachers, strengthening the entire education system,โ€ the minister said.

Pegu also highlighted that schools are not merely government-run institutions but community-driven centres of learning. While the government is investing heavily in modern infrastructure, he said the combined efforts of teachers, alumni bodies and local communities are essential to ensure quality education and the holistic development of students.

Referring to Bajali Higher Secondary School, the minister said the institution currently has around 1,300 students and has the potential to further increase enrolment in the coming years, especially with improved facilities and a supportive academic environment.

The newly inaugurated three-storey main building was opened in the presence of Pegu and local MLA and minister Ranjeet Kumar Das. Addressing the gathering, Das traced the schoolโ€™s journey from a thatched structure in 1926, to a tin-roofed building in 1950, and now to a modern educational complex in 2026.

Das expressed satisfaction over the completion of the long-pending upgradation during his tenure and thanked the people of Bajali, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and concerned departments for their support.

The new building is expected to significantly improve the learning environment, boost enrolment and strengthen Bajali Higher Secondary Schoolโ€™s standing as a leading government educational institution in the region.
