A suspected United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) cadre was apprehended during a joint operation by the Namrup Police, Maibella Army Camp and Joysagar Army Camp under the aegis of the Dao Division.
The operation was launched on the basis of intelligence inputs on Saturday.
The suspected ULFA-I cadre was identified as SS Pvt Navdeep Chetia, a resident of Bokota Kalithan, Nemuguri in Sivsagar district. He is the son of late Vijay Chetia.
One 9-mm pistol, two rounds of live cartridges, one mobile phone and two SIM cards were recovered from the suspected ULFA-I cadre’s possession.
Later, the ULFA-I cadre was handed over to Nemuguri Police Station.
It has been alleged that he was involved in demanding extortion money from the people across the region for fresh cadre recruitment to strengthen the militant outfit. “The apprehended cadre had been active since one year in collecting money and helping in recruitment of new cadres,” stated a defence press communiqué.

According to intelligence inputs received by the police, the movement of ULFA-I cadres in some districts of Upper Assam have come into notice recently.
“The Maibella Army Camp and Joysagar Army Camp have maintained vigil and surveillance in the specified area,” stated in a defence press communiqe.
It may be mentioned that in a major blow to NSCN (R) and the ULFA (I), Changlang battalion of the Assam Rifles apprehended four cadres of the insurgent outfits at Ngeichang and Lekhapani areas of Arunachal Pradesh recently.
The arrested militants have been identified as Nongman Jugli and Sampan Harap of NSCN (R) and Anil Kanikar and Pramod Barua of ULFA (I).
