Supreme Court will hear the bail plea of peasant leader and Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi on February 11.

This will be the first bail plea of Akhil Gogoi to be heard by the Supreme Court.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hear Akhil Gogoi’s bail plea on February 11.

Akhil Gogoi’s bail plea will be heard by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices NV Ramanna, Surya Kant and Aniruddha Basu.

Earlier on January 7, Akhil Gogoi’s bail plea was rejected by the Gauhati High Court.

Akhil Gogoi has been languishing in the jail since December 2019.

Akhil Gogoi was arrested by the police from Jorhat on December 12, 2019 for his alleged role in the violence that broke out during the Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest that rocked Assam in December 2019.

He was booked in multiple cases, including charges of sedition and provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Akhil Gogoi was earlier granted bail by the special NIA court in Guwahati in one of the two cases registered by NIA in connection with his alleged involvement in violent protests against CAA in Assam.

“We had decided to move the Supreme Court challenging the order by the Gauhati High Court and accordingly we filed a petition on January 27,” advocate Shantanu Borthakur said after Gauhati High Court dismissed Akhil Gogoi’s bail plea.
