Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday said Sualkuchi will be brought within the jurisdiction of Guwahati city under State Capital Region (SCR).

Chief Minister said this while launching a Silk Yarn Bank and laying the foundation stone of multi disciplinary sports complex at Sualkuchi in Kamrup.

He also appealed to the people of Sualkuchi to render constructive criticism and help the government to work on its mistakes.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said, “When reference of Sualkuchi is made, we are reminded of the sayings of Mahatma Gandhi who once said the weavers of Assam weave dreams in their looms. Weavers are the symbols of our skill”.

He further said for the development of State’s economy, rural economy has to be strengthened.

“Assam is a home of immense hidden talents and as a result of investment in rural sports infrastructure, many promising players from rural Assam are emerging. Multi disciplinary sports complex at Sualkuchi is an attempt to utilize the sporting potential of Sulakuchi area in the district,” he said.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that under the previous government no practical development had happened for the weavers.

However, the present State government in two years of power has adopted several pragmatic schemes for welfare of the weavers’ community of the state.

He also said that under the scheme cluster will be created to extend benefit to the weavers and enable them to get threads/ cotton yarn in subsidized prices.  Sarma said that government will set up three engineering colleges in the state.

Foundation stone for Bongaigaon Engineering College has already been laid and foundation stone for other two engineering colleges one in Sualkuchi and the other in Behali would be laid very soon.

For smooth connectivity besides strengthening the existing roads, steps has already been taken for constructing a new bridge over Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati and a loan amounting to Rs. 1800 has already been processed.

Handloom and Textile Minister Ranjit Dutta while speaking on the occasion said that to help the weavers of the state especially Sualkuchi and under Silk Yarn Bank 3241 weavers each would be given 1.5 kg silk at 20 per cent subsidized rates.
