“The agitation which has erupted in Brahmaputra valley against Citizens (Amendment) Bill, 2016, is not a fall out of the remarks of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ji about  ‘passing’ the Bill in Parliament,” said Parimal Suklavaidya, BJP leader and minister in Assam.

“These agitations has been going on for quite some time now and is nothing new,” the minister added.

Addressing the media to thank more than a lakh of people who turned up at Ramnagar in Silchar the PM’s rally, Parimal Suklabaidya said, “Modi ji’s remarks is what our party has been saying for ages. It is also there in our election manifesto, for which, no one should have any doubts about our stand on passing the Citizenship Bill.

We have been voicing for safeguarding the interest of the persecuted families who have come from, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

Talking to Northeast Now, Suklabaidya, informed, “Modi ji has spoken for Assam Accord as well as Citizenship Amendment Bill. Both these issues are important to us and a way would be found out, to solve the problems. I don’t think it’s contradictory in nature.”

He added, “Narendra Modi ji touched upon all aspects of the state, beautifully. He has said that, developmental works, both of Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, should go together to take Assam to greater heights.”

About PM Modi’s silence on revival of Cachar and Nowgong paper mills, Suklabaidya said,“ The PM has many other serious issues to address in this vast country. We are working both at the state as well as Centre’s levels for revival of these mills. Investigations are on to find out who are the people that led to closure.”
