The vehicle registration charge across India including Northeast is likely to go up soon.

The union transport ministry has proposed to hike the registration of new vehicles and renewal of registration.

If the proposal is implemented, then one will have to shell out Rs 5,000 to get his or her new petrol or diesel vehicle registered and pay Rs 10,000 for renewal of registration.

Currently, for both new registration and renewal, the fee is Rs 600.

In order to promote electric vehicles and discourage petrol & diesel vehicles, the union transport ministry has proposed hike in registration of conventional vehicle by over 20 times.

According to a TOI report, the ministry has already notified a draft proposal, according to which, there would be no hike in the fees of registration of electric or battery-operated vehicles.

It has also been reported that the union transport ministry has also proposed to hike the fees for automated and manual fitness tests.

It has been proposed that additional Rs 50 will be charged for each day, if the owners of vehicles, which are more than 15 years, fail to get the fitness certificate before the expiry of the certificate.

Besides, fitness tests for twice a year have also been proposed for vehicles both commercial diesel and petrol which are more than 15 years old.

It may be mentioned that currently, registration of vehicles of all categories across the country except Delhi is valid only for 15 years.

In Delhi, there is a complete ban on re-registration of vehicles both petrol and diesel which are 15 years and 10 years old respectively.

It has been reported that for two-wheelers, against the current registration fee of Rs 50 the union transport ministry has proposed a new registration fee of Rs 1,000.

The renewal registration fee has been proposed at Rs 2,000 for two-wheelers.

In the case of cabs, it has been proposed that the registration and renewal charges will be Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000.

In the draft notification of the union transport ministry, it has been proposed that the registration fee for imported vehicles will be from Rs 5,000 to Rs 40,000.

The report quoted a government official as saying: “The proposal of steep increase in the renewal fee for commercial vehicles, particularly trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles by nearly 27 times is aimed at making people opt for scrapping them once they are over 15-year-old.”
