Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said the women weavers of Assam have to play an important role in bolstering the growth of the Indian economy.

While inaugurating a handloom cluster project at Lejai in Dibrugah district on Sunday, Chief Minister Sonowal said the reality that weavers of Assam are superior to their counterparts in other parts of the country will have to be shown through their performances.

He said using latest mode of science and technology, the output of the weavers of Assam will have to be enhanced.

Referring to ‘Father of the nation’ Mahatma Gandhi, who said “weavers of Assam weave dreams in their looms”, is the testimony of the superiority of handloom and textiles in Assam.

Sonowal also said the dignity of the weavers of Assam and their creation got shot in the arm when Prime Minister Narendra Modi used Assamese gamocha on various occasions.

Swami Vivekananda once said the society, which worships women, is superior in all respects.

Women are the great teachers and their energy is the ultimate energy.

He said the women of the state need to show their supremacy by empowering themselves.

It may be noted that government gears up to set up a handloom cluster development centre involving Rs 15.34 crore in Sivasagar, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Golaghat and Lakhimpur.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Sonowal on Sunday participated in a public meeting at Moran in Dibrugarh.

Sonowal announced that six lakh farmers of the State would be provided Rs.5,000 each for purchasing farming equipment.

In the meeting, the CM inaugurated the projects for development of National Highway 37 passing through Moran, development of the children’s park near Lions’ Club, Moran and also laid the foundation stone of a bust of Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha.

Earlier on Sunday, the CM also visited Moran Blind School as part of the ‘Swachhta hi Seva’ week celebrations synchronising with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.
