Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi on Friday said it is pertinent for the State to talk and deliberate on the care and protection of children and juvenile.
Prof Mukhi said this at the attended the valedictory session of a two-day state level workshop conducted for state police force and other stakeholders on Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 at Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati on Friday, a Raj Bhawan release stated.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the workshop which was organised by the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in collaboration with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, the Governor said that 41 per cent of the total population of Assam belong to the age group of 0-18 and the number stands at a towering 1,27,68,623.
The Governor also said that realizing the importance of care and protection of children and ensuring justice to the juvenile, even the Constitution of India has special provision of child right and juvenile justice.
Even the state has accorded special status to children and given special rights and privileges through Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

The Governor further said that police have constituted an important segment to provide protection of children from various forms of torture, subjugation and exploitation.
Moreover, the State has promulgated various laws to empower the police to act as a deterrent against abuse of child rights, he further said.
“For the protection of children against violence and its several manifestations there should be synergistic approach from all concerned of the society besides police,” he said adding, “We must understand that children and their rights are top priority for a civilized society and everybody should complement the police to protect the rights of the children and safeguard their childhood.”
The Governor also said Assam is the first state to have officially declared a day exclusively dedicated to the cause of child protection.
“Commemoration of Child Protection Day synchronizing with the foundation day of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights every year is a fitting tribute to our endeavour and pledge for child right protection and ensuring justice to juvenile,’ the Governor added.
He also urged upon the Commission and all the stake holders that the services towards children should be dealt with compassionately and sincerely, the release added.
