A rumour has been circulated in social media about Nipah virus in Dibrugarh of eastern Assam and the name of Dr Amrit Baruah has been used in the message which is malicious.
The fake message which has been circulated through social media read,
‘NIPAH VIRUS ARRIVED DIBRUGARH EMERGENCY INFORMATION PLEASE NOTE IT DOWN SERIOUSLY
Many people are admitted in Dibrugarh…. with strange sickness. Dr Amrit Baruah from Dibrugarh said that the sickness is coming from eating litchees (lechu).
He said that if it is going on like this, thousands of people will die within a week. Please tell the children not to eat lechees. The leeches are eaten by bats and people are getting strange sickness. It is affecting the liver and Dr Baruah is also affected. He went to various doctors but sickness can’t be cured. Dr Baruah said that he may die soon due to liver infection and he is already standing near……’
Meanwhile, the fake message has been circulated through WhatsApp in the groups.
Recently, some people have died of Nipha virus in Kerala.
After that fake messages has been circulated across India not to eat fruits.
Few days ago a fake message has been circulated in Meghalaya that the government has instructed the people to abstain from eating litchees.
But the government ruled out the statement and said clearly that they would take action those who are circulating fake messages about Nipha virus.
Talking to Northeast Now, Dr Amrit Kumar Baruah said he had lodged an FIR at Dibrugarh police station aganist the fake message.
“I am very much surprised when I got my name in the fake message of Nipha virus. Somebody is trying to defame me by circulating fake message about Nipha virus using my name. There is panic among people because of this fake message,” he said.
