Situation in state has improved: Assam Police

While protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) continue, the Assam Police on Monday claimed the situation in the state has improved “immensely”.

The Assam Police on its official Twitter handle on Monday stated, “The situation in the State has improved immensely. We thank the people of Assam for following the spirit of the law.”

The Assam Police also stated that the day curfew was withdrawn in Guwahati from 6 am on Monday.

However, night curfew would remain from 9 pm on Monday to 6 am till Tuesday, it stated.

Meanwhile, mobile internet services have been suspended for another 24 hours in Assam on Monday in 10 districts namely – Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup.

On Monday, Assam Police briefly detained AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi along with hundreds of protesters from Latasil ground in Guwahati.

Police detained Bhattacharya and Gogoi along with other AASU activists as they took out a protest march from Latsil ground to the office of the Kamrup (M) deputy commissioner at Kachari against the CAA.

Police said the AASU protesters were detained as the protest rally was taken out without prior permission from the district administration.

The AASU and 28 other organisations, representing different indigenous communities of Assam, launched a three-day ‘Satyagraha’ with a congregation at Latasil ground in Guwahati against the CAA.

Responding to the call of AASU’s central committee, the districts, sub-divisional and Anchalik units of the students’ union have also organized ‘Satyagraha’ in their respective areas.
