Sidelined by AIUDF for making “anti-Assamese remarks”, Sheikh Shah Alam is now AGP’s Goalpara West candidate.

In the third list of candidates released by the AGP, the party has announced Sheikh Shah Alam as its candidate from the Goalpara West constituency.

Notably, Sheik Shah Alam was sidelined by the Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF for allegedly making “anti-Assamese” and ‘communal’ remarks during a public rally in the State.

In fact Badruddin Ajmal had snatched the microphone from Sheikh Shah Alam, while he was making the ‘derogatory’ remarks.

Alam had allegedly threatened to attack the Hindus in the AIUDF’s public meeting at Sonari in lower Assam’s Goalpara district in 2017.

Later that year, Sheikh Shah Alam after being sidelined by the AIUDF had quit the party.

Later, Sheikh Shah Alam had joined the AGP in July 2019 after being sidelined by the AIUDF.

Now, the AGP has fielded Sheikh Shah Alam, who made “anti-Assamese” remarks, as its candidate from Goalpara West seat.

Sheikh Shah Alam was earlier elected to the Assam Assembly from West Goalpara constituency in 2001 (from NCP ticket) and 2011 (from AIUDF ticket).

In 2016, he was defeated by Congress’ Andur Rashid Mandal by a margin of 24,339 votes.
