Filmmaker Rima Das will be honoured with ‘Someone to Watch’ award at the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) to be held in Cleveland, a city located in Ohio of the United States.
The 43rd edition of the film festival is scheduled to be held from March 27 to April 7. CIFF launched the ‘Someone to Watch Award’ series in the year 2003.
According to CIFF, the purpose of giving out the prestigious award is to showcase the work of mid-career filmmakers who are rising stars in international film-making.
The CIFF website states that Rima’s films Village Rockstars and Bulbul Can Sing depict young girls growing up in rural India with similar rebellious natures to her own.
Rima, an accomplished independent filmmaker who was named as one of the 50 Most Influential Indians by GQ India in 2018, was born and brought up in Chaygaon, a village in Assam.
She graduated from Cotton College, Guwahati and earned her postgraduate degree from Pune University.
Her father was the head teacher of a girl’s high school and her mother ran a local bookstore and a printing press.
Rima now manages the Mumbai-based production company, Flying River Films, which supports local and independent filmmakers of the Northeast.
