Newly-appointed Assam Forest and Environment Minister Parimal Suklabaidya during his visit to the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in Guwahati strictly ordered the State Zoo authority to provide sufficient food and proper treatment to the animals of the zoo on Tuesday.
Forest and Environment Minister Suklabaidya also directed the Assam State Zoo authority to give importance on maintaining a clean environment in the zoo for survival of the animals.

On his maiden visit to the visit after assuming charge as the Forest and Environment Minister, Suklabaidya further the minister said, “Two giraffes will be brought to the State zoo soon from Mysore in Karnataka.”
It may be mentioned that there is no giraffe in the State zoo since 2014.
Laxmi, a female giraffe, who was one of the major attractions for the visitors to the State zoo, for over 20 years, died due to age-related ailments in 2014 after which there has been no giraffe in the zoo.

Earlier, the Assam State Zoo Protection Forum made allegations of venison consumption by the zoo authority.
The Forum also brought allegation of killing of deer in the zoo’s residential colony.
