Hundreds of people in Nilbagan area under Hojai district took to the streets on Monday evening at 7 in protest against rising incidents of sexual assaults of women, girls and children.
The protestors also protested against the gang rape and murder of eight-year-old girl Asifa Bano. Asifa was gang-raped and brutally murdered inside a temple in Jammu.
All the protesters in Nilbagan marched from Nilbagan Model Hospital area to Nilbagan Tinali with candle lights and placards which read as ‘Punish the guilty’. The protesters during the rally shouted slogans demanding life sentence to the rapists.
In another case of rape in Assam, a 10-year-old girl child was allegedly raped by two guards of a construction site at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati city on Monday night.
Police sources said the two guards allegedly raped the minor at an under-construction building. Locals recovered the girl child in a half-nude position from near the under-construction building and reported the incident to police.
Locals also caught hold of the two guards, identified as Dhiren Rongpi and Jiten Rongpi and handed them over to Sonapur police.
Sonapur police have registered as a case in connection with the incident.
