A pregnant woman and her two sisters from Guwahati have allegedly been stripped and brutally tortured by two police personnel at Burha police outpost in Assam’s Darrang district.

The outrageous incident which took place in the night of September 8 at Burha police outpost came to light only on Tuesday when the women approached the media.

Accused SI Mahendra Sharma

The three women alleged that they were brought from their house at Satgaon and Six Mile area in Guwahati to the police outpost by its officer in charge Mahendra Sarma and later they were allegedly brutally tortured overnight by him along with a woman police constable.

The three women alleged that they were beaten up with batons in private parts by SI Sarma, two constables and a woman police constable inside the police station.

The three sisters had been taken to the police outpost on September 8 in order to seek information about their missing brother who had eloped with a girl.

Among the three women who had been tortured, one of them had been pregnant for two months.

One of the sisters had filed a complaint with the Darrang superintendent of police (SP) on September 10 alleging about the severity of torture they had to face in the hands of the police personnel at the Burha police outpost.

But there was no action against the accused police official for the last seven days.

The pregnant woman alleged that she had to terminate her pregnancy after the doctors declared that she was not in a fit condition due to severe injuries on her body.

Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia has asked the Darrang SP to inquire into the incident.

Darrang SP Amrit Bhuyan has refuted the allegations that he covered up the incident and shielding accused SI Sharma.

“On the basis of the complaint filed by one of the women, I have ordered an enquiry into incident and DSP (HQ) is conducting the probe,” he told reporters in Mangaldai on Tuesday.

He further said if charges are proved against any police personnel in the inquiry, criminal action will be taken accordingly.
