To provide better rail connectivity to the people of Manipur, a passenger train service was flagged off by Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and Union minister of state for Railways Raosaheb Patil Danve.
Passenger train service which has been re-introduced on Sunday between Jiribam of Manipur and Silchar of Assam to fulfil the long-standing requirement of the people of Manipur.

The flagging off programme was held remotely through video link from Imphal.
State ministers, MPs, MLAs and senior officials from Railways and Manipur government were also present.
Manipur chief minister conveyed through his address, his keen interest in the development of railway infrastructure for the benefit of the people of Manipur.

In his speech, MoS for Railways, Coal & Mine, Raosaheb Patil Danve said, “The train (05659/05660) will fulfill the cherished goal of enabling the people of Manipur to travel through railways to the rest of country.”
Danve and N Biren Singh also discussed future plans of railways in the development of the state of Manipur.
Train no 05659 will start from Silchar every Monday and Thursday at 7-00 AM to reach Jiribam at 8-55 AM.
During the return journey, train no 05660 will start from Jiribam at 1-30 PM to reach Silchar at 3-30 PM.
The train timings and days of the run have been planned to facilitate the passengers of Imphal to board long-distance trains from Silchar.

The train will have 8 general class compartments and 2 luggage-cum-guard vans.
The train will stop at seven stations during its journey.
This service is expected to boost the socio-economic condition of the people of Manipur.
The train service on this route was suspended with effect from June 7, 2019 due to low patronage and Covid19 pandemic.
Danve also reviewed the progress of various ongoing railway projects of Northeast Frontier Railway.
Anshul Gupta, General Manager, Northeast Frontier Railway, gave a presentation on the overall performance of NF Railway (Open line) and day-to-day functioning pertaining to operation of trains and the development of passenger amenities in various states.
Sunil Sharma General Manager, NFR (Construction) along with senior railway officials from the construction organization also gave a presentation of the ongoing projects of Railway construction in Northeast.
A 100-ft tall Monumental Flag was installed recently at the Jiribam Railway station which is the District Headquarters of the Jiribam district of Manipur.
This has not only improved the aesthetics of the station but has also imparted a sense of nationalism & patriotism among the passengers of Indian Railways.
The NFR (Construction) organization is executing the Jiribam-Imphal New BG railway line projects (110.625 km) at an anticipated cost of Rs. 12,264.15 cr.
Eight new station buildings, 11 major bridges, 134 minor bridges, 4 Road Overbridges, 12 Road Under Bridges and more than 71,066 m of tunneling are being constructed.
The target date for the completion of the project is December 2023.
Various issues related to the timely completion of the project was discussed by all stakeholders.
