According to reports, police also started an operation in search of Debasish Khargharia. On Monday police visited his in-laws’ house at Demow in Sivasagar.
On being asked what action the Government would take against the son of Rajani Khargharia, Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told media persons, ONGC does not come under the ambit of the Assam Employees’ Parents Responsibility and Norms for Accountability and Monitoring Act, 2017 (PRANAM Act). “He (Debasish Khargharia) would have faced punishment if he was an Assam Government employee,” said Sarma.
Sarma added, “We will have to check if his (Rajani Khargharia) daughter-in-law falls under the ambit of PRANAM Act.” He also said such unfortunate people could have been extended support through the Social Welfare Department.
It may be mentioned that the PRANAM Act, 2017 has made it compulsory for the State Government employees to take care of their dependent parents and disabled siblings sans any income source with immediate effect.
While Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said no one should forget humanity. He said, “All sections of people should co-perate in successful implementation of the PRANAM Act.”
Reacting to the Khargharia couple’s suicide incident, Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass expressed his grave concern over the growing son-centric mentality of the parents.
Dass said, “We must leave the mentality of ignoring girl children. I hope, such discriminations would lessen if we equally give respect to the girl children.”
