Over 60000 persons declared foreigners since 1985 in Assam: G S Reddy

Union minister of state for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday said that nearly 64000 persons have been declared foreigners through ex-parte proceedings by Foreigners Tribunals in Assam since 1985.

In reply to a question by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, Reddy informed that a total of 63959 persons have been declared foreigners through ex-parte proceedings by Foreigners Tribunals in Assam from 1985 to February 28, 2019.

Reddy also said that till June 25, 2019, a total of 1133 persons who had been declared foreigners had been lodged in six detention camps in the State.

He also informed that out of the total 1133 persons, 769 of them had been staying in the detention camps for one year and 335 of them had been lodged there over three years.

Reddy also added that the people who had been staying in detention camps are also provided free legal aid by the District Legal Service Authority whenever need arises.
