Conrad K Sangma of National People’s Party (NPP) has released its first list of candidates for five Lok Sabha constituencies out of 14 in Assam.

The list was released on Thursday by the Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma.  Nazia Yasmin Mazumder will fight from Silchar while Ram Bahadur Sunar will contest from Tezpur. Abdul Aziz will try his luck from Kaliabor and Kamala Rajkonwar from Jorhat.  Dibrugarh has been left to Bhaben Baruah.

NPP started its Assam unit on March 6 this year and announced that it will contest from all the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Northeast. Among the five selected by the party, Bhaben Baruah is a former minister and two-time MLA while Abdul Aziz is a former MLA. Both were earlier with AGP. Ram Bahadur Sunar, who was earlier with the Congress, joined NPP on Thursday.

With just about three weeks left for the Lok Sabha elections, NPP is currently trying to grow from strength to strength in Assam and is “connecting” with the voters. Assam is going to the polls on April 11, 18 and 23 next.

The party’s poll planks include – a “United Northeast” federalism, Look East Policy implementation, connectivity and infrastructure upgrade and stiff opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.
