The North Eastern Council (NEC) is planning to deliver life saving medicines through drones in remote areas of the north-eastern region.

While addressing a consultation meeting on healthcare in Shillong, NEC planning advisor Calvin H Kharsiing said that the project is still at the experimenting stage and will be first implemented in Shillong.

He also revealed that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh for carrying out the initial stage of the project.

Kharsiing said that drones will be quite a useful and easy way of delivering life saving medicines in remote areas of the northeast which are facing many challenges like shortage of trained medical personnel, lack of proper medical facilities and poor accessibility.

He also added that local communities will be involved in carrying out the project as they are the main helping hands during times of trouble in the inaccessible areas of the northeast.

The consultation was jointly organized by the NEC and Unicef in collaboration with Oxfam India.

It was held with an aim to strengthen and plan new ways for responding to public health emergencies in the northeast.
