The Central Government on Wednesday told the Rajya Sabha that they have no plan to extend the NRC in States other than Assam.

Informing about the Government’s stand regarding National Register of Citizens (NRC) in other States, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir told the Rajya Sabha that the NRC 1951 in Assam is being updated under the provisions of Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

Union Minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir also said: “The exercise to update NRC 1951 is being conducted under the Special provisions in respect of State of Assam under the Citizenship Rules, 2003.  At present, there is no proposal to extend the National Register of Citizens to States other than Assam.”

The applications for preparation of National Register of Citizens in Assam were invited in May-August, 2015 and after necessary scrutiny and verification, the complete draft NRC has been published on July 30 last year.

The claims and objections on the draft NRC have been invited until December 31.

“After the disposal of claims and objections, the NRC is to be finalised as per the time lines approved by the Supreme Court of India,” Union Minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir told the Rajya Sabha.

Earlier, on December 18, 2018, Union Minister Ahir told the Lok Sabha that the Central Government was not proposing to extend the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) to states other than Assam.

In a written reply submitted in the Lok Sabha, Ahir had stated:  “At present, there is no proposal to extend the NRC to states other than Assam.”
