Dibrugarh: Restoration of railway tracks damaged by the recent floods has begun in Assam’s Tinsukia Railway Division, with officials estimating that train services on the affected route may resume in about three weeks.
Railway infrastructure in parts of Sivasagar and Charaideo districts suffered extensive damage after floods triggered by the overflowing Dikhow and Darika rivers washed away sections of track earlier this month.
An official said restoration work is being carried out under the supervision of senior railway authorities.
“Railway tracks were washed away due to the floods, severely affecting train services under the Tinsukia Railway Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway. Railway engineers and workers are working to restore the damaged tracks at the earliest,” the official said.
According to the official, repair work is progressing on the stretch between Simulguri Junction and Lakwa station in Charaideo district, where heavy flooding washed away sections of the railway line.
The official said railway personnel and machinery have been deployed at multiple locations to expedite restoration.
The damage occurred on the night of July 19 when floodwaters from the Dikhow and Darika rivers inundated the area. Railway officials said around 800 metres of track were washed away.
The floods also affected several villages, including Lonpuriya, Bhotorbari, Darikiyal, Gomotha and Abhayapuriya, damaging homes, property and other infrastructure. Local residents expressed hope that rail services would resume once restoration work is completed.
