Jesuit priest and eminent sociologist Prof (Fr) Alphonsus D’Souza, SJ passed away on Friday morning. He was 78.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer in June this year and died peacefully at 7.05 a.m. on Friday, said Dr Walter Fernandes, senior fellow of North Eastern Social Research Centre (NESRC).

D’Souza, who set up the first department of Sociology at St Joseph’s College, Jakhama in Nagaland, is known as the ‘Father of Sociology’ of the state.
Born at Bajpe, near Mangalore in 1941, the eminent sociologist founded the department of Sociology at St Aloysius College, Mangalore in 1972 and taught there till 1995.
In that year D’Souza shifted to St Joseph’s College, Jakhama in Nagaland, to found the first department of Sociology in that State, said Dr Fernandes.

“As such he is the Father of Sociology in Nagaland,” he said.
He taught there till 2008 and then shifted to Guwahati as Senior Fellow at NESRC.
A funeral mass will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Catholic Cathedral in city’s Rukminigaon area.
His funeral will be held at the Jesuit Novitiate, Mawshohroh in Shillong on Sunday at 10 a.m.
