In yet another case of moral policing, a woman along with her male friend was stripped and beaten up at Krishnai in lower Assam’s Goalpara district by three men.

The incident came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

Police said the woman from North Garo Hills in Meghalaya, was stripped while her male friend was beaten up with sticks injuring him severely.

He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Goalpara.

The Goalpara police on Tuesday arrested three youths for their alleged involvement in the incident.

They have been identified as Amiyo Rabha, Apurba Rabha and Samiron Rabha.

“We have arrested them based on an FIR lodged on Monday evening with the Krishnai police station by the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of North Garo Hills, Meghalaya on behalf of the victim girl,” Goalpara additional superintendent of police (ASP) Amitava Basumatary said.

The youths allegedly harassed them on December 1 when they found the couple in a jungle along Meghalaya border.

They allegedly asked the couple to strip and when they refused, the accused stripped the woman off besides beating up her male friend and filmed the entire incident.

Later they allegedly circulated the video of the incident on WhatsApp.

A source, close to the victim’s family alleged that the trio had demanded Rs 50,000 from the couple.

Police have registered a case (No. 248/19) against the accused under section 354 (B) / 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 8 of Prevention of Children From the Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 67 (A) of Information Technology Act.

The accused will be produced before the court on Wednesday.
