The Darrang Police on Wednesday arrested the main accused, Pankaj Hazarika, for allegedly leading a mob assault of a Dhubri boy on June 9 at Adarsha village under Kalagaon Police Station in Darrang district.

Meanwhile, the All Kamatapur Students’ Organization (AKSO) has demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits involved in the mob attack of Vijoy Ray, at Adarsha village on June 9, 2018.

The students’ organisation also threatened to launch a statewide agitation if immediate steps are taken to book the guilty.

Uttam Roy, organising secretary of AKSO, expressed concern over the incident of moral policing and mob violence that had happened in broad daylight in an area under Kalaigaon Police Station. He alleged, “The local police were trying to suppress the matter.”

A day after two Guwahati youths were lynched at Panjuri Kachari Gaon under Dokmoka Police Station in Karbi Anglong district, Vijoy was assaulted by a mob, allegedly led by one Pankaj Hazarika at Adarsha village under Kalaigaon Police Station of Udalguri district.

Ray told Northeast Now that he was allegedly thrashed and tortured by the family members of a girl from the village with whom he had an affair.

The girl had allegedly called him to visit her at her village where a mob, comprising her family members, caught hold of him, stripped and started beating him despite his repeated appeals by introducing himself.

“I kept on repeating that I am an Assamese and a resident of Gauripur in Dhubri district. However, nobody paid any heed to my appeals,” Ray alleged.

Ray further said that some of the attackers also asked him if his name was enrolled in the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The ordeal remained a secret with Ray till a video clip of him being bashed up went viral on the social media over the past two days.

After his parents and people from Dhubri came to know about it on Tuesday, Ray filed a complaint against Hazarika in Gauripur Police Station in Dhubri district and the AKSO filed another complaint with Udalguri Police the same day.

However, the village where the incident took place falls under the administrative control of Darrang district.

The victim, son of Habul Chandra Ray, is a resident of Gauripur town, Ward No 1 under Gauripur Police Station in Dhubri district and had worked for Vodafone cellular company at Udalguri three months ago when he developed an affair with the said girl.

A case (No 736/2018) under Sections 120 (B), 342, 307 and 325 of IPC has been registered by Gauripur Police.

Dhubri Additional Superintendent of Police, G Deka confirmed the receipt of the complaint and said as the incident occurred in Darrang district.  The case has been transferred to the police station concerned and the ASP hoped that all the culprits would be arrested very soon with the help of Darrang Police.
