Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma and former chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma paid tributes to former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Wednesday.

The mortal remains of Congress stalwart Tarun Gogoi and former three-time Assam CM, who passed away at Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on November 23 at 5.34 pm, have been kept at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra since Tuesday.

While sharing pictures of the moments of paying tribute to the former Assam chief minister, Meghalaya chief minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad Sangma termed Gogoi as the tallest political stalwart of the Northeast.

Chief minister Conrad Sangma said for many, Gogoi was a father figure.

He said Gogoi’s demise is a great loss for the entire Northeastern region.

“Paid my respects to Assam’s son & tallest political stalwart of the North East, (L) Sh. Tarun Gogoi ji who was a father figure to many. His demise is a great loss to the entire North East,” Conrad Sangma tweeted.

Conrad Sangma also met Gogoi’s son, Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi, his family members and conveyed his deep condolence.

“Also conveyed my condolences to Sh. @GauravGogoiAsm & his family. May God be with them,” the Meghalaya chief minister said.

Talking to reporters, Conrad Sangma said with the passing away of Gogoi, a vacuum has created in the region.

Meanwhile, former Meghalaya chief minister and Congress leader Dr Mukul Sangma also paid tribute to the former Assam chief minister and party leader, Tarun Gogoi at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra.

Talking to reporters, Meghalaya Opposition leader, Dr Mukul Sangma said, “We are deeply saddened at the demise of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.”

“I had the privilege to have known him very closely,” the former Meghalaya CM said, adding, “He was a leader not only of Assam but also of Northeast.”
