A 33-year-old drug smuggler from Myanmar has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA).
Manipur police recently arrested the drug smuggler in Imphal in connection with the seizure of a large quantity of World is Yours (WY) tablets worth Rs 400 crore.
The smuggler was identified as Kyaw Kyaw Naing alias Abdul Rahim of Kawhmu village in Myanmar’s Rangoon.
The district magistrate (Thoubal) issued the detention order against the smuggler identified on January 29, TOI reported.
Following the NSA detention order, Naing has again been lodged in Manipur central jail at Sajiwa in Imphal and the state NSA advisory board will hold a meeting to confirm his detention, said an official.
Naing was arrested by a team of Thoubal district police, led by SP S Ibomcha Singh, from the gate of the Imphal airport on September 24 last year.
Police seized Rs 60,000, some US dollars and Myanmarese currency, two mobile phones, passport and other documents from Naing, said to be an international drug lord involved in smuggling contraband substances in Myanmar, India and Bangladesh.
Altogether six people – Naing, two persons from Tripura and three from Thoubal district – were arrested in connection with the biggest ever drug haul in the Northeast.
